sal - Linux - Fedora Core 5This machine replaced hemlock as a primary work machine, after hemlock suffered a RAID failure. This machine is a Dell GX620, with two 2.8 GHz processors, 2 GB RAM, and a 160 GB hard disk drive. Installation of Fedora Core 5 went very smoothly. One complaint is that during installation of optional packages, there is no "All Packages" option. The list of packages has been simplified dramatically, but this results in hiding the actual package names behind a more generic name such as "Servers". Surprisingly, XEmacs is no long included with Fedora. Thankfully, yum makes it trivial to install new packages. I also highly recommend following the steps at Fedora FAQ, an highly valuable resource. As with the experience installing Fedora Core 4, there were problems with the default audio players, so was done with hemlock, RealPlayer was installed and has worked flawlessly. Other issues, such as CIFS versus SMBFS and Java socket usage of IPv6, are the same as hemlock, with the same solutions. |
